In late-summer to Fall of 2025, I was incredibly honored to work as Director of Photography with Shulea Cheang for her new interactive, 4-channel film installation LOVER LOVE. It was inspiring watching Shu Lea, a truly international artist, develop this project in collaboration with queer and trans people rooted in this particular place, our Tucson, in the borderlands. To witness her confront what this moment means for genderqueer and trans people in the US through creative process was a reminder that art is undeniably political, whether explicit or indirect — and that we as artists can and should meet real life in our work.“LOVER LOVE brings Cheang’s responsive, evocative work back to New York City, where she lived from the late 1970s until 2000. The exhibition's title is drawn from “It’s Lover, Love” (2011) a song by Aérea Negrot. Since 2016, Negrot has collaborated with Cheang, composing music for her films, several of which she also performed in...” (Leslie Lohmann press release)

Eryka &#38;amp; Nola: Make the Brutal Tender
Film by Michael CaskerMini portrait film about the relationship that developed between Eryka Dellenbach and Nola Sporn Smith through working together on Make the Brutal Tender...and the work that resulted from that relationship. Filmed five years after the project’s last pre-pandemic showing, it marks the first time the collaborators returned to the studio together to revisit and embody the old ritual. Filmed on 16mm celluloid between the Woods Studio in Queens and Moodna Creek in New Windsor—two sites central to the piece’s creation and transformation.

Excited for this program of student work from my first semester teaching Video 1 at Tohono O’odham Community College !&#38;nbsp;
This program is the culmination of a semester-long exploration of story, soundscapes, and how these can provide the foundation for films and videos. It was developed in collaboration with Berlin-based sound artist Mad Kate (aka Roi), who guest-taught two class sessions and is hosting (and editing) the international radio premiere.

The broadcast features four distinct student works - each entirely self-produced, recorded, and edited by the students.Each piece will air with a brief student introduction and be broadcast across both Hewel Ñi’ok, the community radio network of the Tohono O’odham Nation, and Colaboradio via Freie Radios Berlin - Brandenburg, an open-access radio platform in Germany. The program will also feature commentary from our host Roi / Mad Kate and Video 1 instructor, Eryka Dellenbach, offering insight into the Video 1 class and its projects. 
Featuring sounds by local Native sound artists Gertie &#38;amp; the T.O. Boyz, Maiiuwak (audio from live performance in collaboration with Eryka Dellenbach) and Lorenzo Pablo of Canyon Records.

The night of video performance streaming will feature ‘Cuir’ performance videos from Xicanx, Mexican, Colombian, Chilean and Bolivian artists.

The intention is to create a collective transnational offering to permeate the viewers’ imaginaries and call upon them to contest the gaze of hegemonic power play that results in violence and mass exodus of people especially from Latin America to the US and their subsequent detention in cages and/or disappearance.

The call to action is for accountability in our everyday actions—to breathe consciousness amidst the white washing we are complicit with and to forge radically tender ties as ways to transmute the roles we have been placed in.

HEKLER Assembly (Fall 2021): Infrastructures of Care is an online study program that will explore the relationship between civic engagement and collectivity through art practice and pedagogy. 

Over the course of 12 weeks we will critically consider the histories, ethics, and aesthetics of community-engaged art practices that emphasize collaboration, situated knowledge, and collective action. We will do this through participatory workshops, presentations, study groups, peer-to-peer work, and on-site interventions. Participants will gain knowledge and experience in collaborative and collective work methodologies, organizing tools, and resources that will be made into a printed and digital twin publication. 

Infrastructures of Care has been developed by our mighty group of organizers through months of convening, collective thinking and creating the syllabus. At this time, we have the capacity for 15 participants in a cohort. The cohort will attend 12 sessions in total, 6 private and 6 public programs.

You
Hekler’s ANTI FEAR series are initiated in collaboration with New York-based artist and neurologist Sonja Blum. It is an evolving collective practice aiming in this time of crisis and change for a space decidedly between cultural/theoretical dialogue and therapeutic discourse. It is envisioned as a space in which we bring privately held fears into community with others' fears to embrace vulnerability and open collective experiments in community-building, trust, and reimagining the commons. This work is explored through poetry, movement/body work, breathing exercises and meditations, readings, lectures and other practices that untie repressive knots and make us feel empowered, imaginative and hopeful.

“The Long Way Home,” a new experimental documentary + performance film by Christopher-Rasheem Mcmillan and Eryka Dellenbach, poses a way of contending with the Black body as a composite body, one that is connected to, affirms, and disrupts the archive and Historiography. Nola, Apt. features two segments of a solo Eryka witnessed Nola performing when they first met. Partially influenced by visiting the Western Wall in Jerusalem in 2013 during their Birthright, the solo explores the act of private ritual put on public display, and inversely, the individualization of codified, public ritual.Held to be uniquely holy by the ancient Jews, The Western Wall is the only remains of the Second Temple of Jerusalem, destroyed by the Romans in 70 CE. It is located within the larger complex of the Temple Mount, known to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif, which houses significant Islamic landmarks such as the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock, making the area a focal point of religious and political tensions. There is a lasting practice of kissing the surface, placing notes, or whispering into the crevices of this wall by visitors. The wall is also strictly divided by gender - women are allotted about half of the space devoted to men - though it is possible to peer through the mechitzah (partition) to witness the practice of those on the other side.

Switching the context of Nola’s performance [back] to a private setting brings the work to a confrontation with its own vulnerability. Adding a third layer of celluloid film documentation creates a new, fragile dynamic between performer, ritual and audience, (who is in this case a single, scrutinizing documentarian). The editing of the performance by the filmmaker emphasizes the sensuousness of the performance and juxtaposes choreographic moments located at the poles of the brutal, and the gently erotic, perceived through the lens of the queer, femme gaze.

I met Ashley while I was working on another project in Arkansas in 2018. At the time, she was involved with an organization that works with young women teaching them about how to hunt and dress animals through a lens of wildlife conservation. After meeting for coffee, she consented to a semiformal interview regarding her experience in this field as well as her experience as a woman hunter and gun owner.

My interest was twofold: On a personal level, I related to her in that I also grew up the daughter of a hunter father, in the suburbs of Illinois. She grew up amidst the men in her family hunting but did not herself hunt. Although I have never hunted I was from a young age intimately accustomed to the dressing practices associated with the aftermath of hunting. In my case, this took place in the setting of our garage in suburban Illinois whose floor was stained by blood and gasoline. In Ashley’s case, dressing took place on the field. On another level, I wanted to know more about her simultaneous decision to wield the rifle as a weapon of personal defense (at home), as opposed to a handgun.

This film contains only a tiny portion of a longer conversation, with verbal and physical components, some which are visible in the 16mm film documentation. Fragments of this conversation are juxtaposed to highlight the multifold perception of the hunter who kills what they also admire, as well as address their own vulnerability. Documentation features Ashley and her boyfriend at the time shooting at a target with her rifle, and his handgun. What is not captured on film is myself shooting both of these guns as well as they taught me how to after not shooting since adolescence.</description>
